Innovation, conferences and networking: campus update

Home to industry leading bioscience organisations and a thriving conference centre there’s always lots happening at York Biotech Campus. It’s been a busy year, so we’ve rounded up some of our fantastic conferences, events and occupier news so far…

York & North Yorkshire Property Forum at LCC

Earlier this year, we held the York & North Yorkshire Property Forum at our Lakeside Conference Centre (LCC). The event was hosted by Fera Science and was full of insightful discussions on current issues facing the property industry. Fera’s Principle Scientist, Glyn Jones and Director of Savills, Hannah Turner led conversations on how the property industry can navigate Biodiversity Net Gain regulations coming into place in November 2023. We’re proud to play our part in such an important event which shows how the Yorkshire bioeconomy is beneficial to the region as a whole.

Fostering North Yorkshire Conference (FNY) 2023

The FNY annual conference has been held at the LCC for a number of years now and this year we welcomed 170 council staff, foster carers, foster children and birth children attend. We’re committed to supporting our local community where we can, both within and outside of the bioscience sector, which is why we’re proud to host the FNY Conferences. The 2023 celebration was extra special as 18 foster carers were awarded for a combined total of 115 years’ service! Read all about the conference here.

UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) announces three-year plan

The UKHSA northern site is based on campus and is responsible for protecting England’s public from a range of health threats, including diseases associated with the consumption of food and water. In August it introduced its inaugural three-year plan to protect the nation’s health from current and future health threats, working to prevent them where possible. Read UKHSA’s Chief Executive, Professor Dame Jenny Harries thoughts on the strategic plan here.

Forward Institute returns for Responsible Leadership event

Last year the Forward Institute came to the LCC, they were so impressed with our conference facilities and the wonderful city of York that they came back for a second year running! The Responsible Leadership Event brought together participants of its Fellowship Programme which includes exceptional leaders from across the public, private and social sectors to explore, debate and learn how to lead change as morally and ethically responsible leaders in the face of modern crises. It’s fantastic hosting the Forward Institute and we look forward to the Responsible Leadership event returning in 2024.

Autumn in the atrium: networking events

This Autumn we’ve had a wonderful array of events in our atrium dedicated to networking so the thriving bioscience organisations on site have the opportunity to learn more about our community. First we were visited by Fisher Scientific and BRAND, a manufacturer of volumetric glassware, liquid handling products and life science consumables for a mini exhibition in the atrium. Recently, we were also visited by Starlab, which specialises in the field of Liquid Handling Technology and laboratory products. Starlab visited to exhibit its sustainability showcase – they even gave out free plants!

We also hosted an innovation lunch, with occupier Cargill as our spotlight speaker who gave an insightful talk on some of the products they create and the science behind them. Our innovation lunches invite community members from all the different bioscience organisations on campus to network with people in the sector, discussing trends and sharing updates on their latest innovative projects. It was fantastic to see a mix of people from across the campus, as well as a special guest from the Biorenewables Development Centre. It’s been an exciting couple of months, and we’re looking forward to seeing what the rest of the year brings.
