Get to Know: Sandra Thomas

Keeping York Biotech Campus (YBC) safe, organised, and running smoothly 24 hours a day takes a dedicated team who work around the clock. One of the key people behind the scenes is Sandra Thomas, a member of our security team.

Sandra joined YBC in 2022, initially providing receptionist cover before transitioning into a front-of-house security role. Since then, she has become known not only for her professionalism and keen attention to detail, but also for her warm, approachable nature that helps make the campus feel like a true community.

In this edition of Get to Know, Sandra shares what a typical day in her role looks like, how her career has evolved over the years, and why she enjoys the variety and challenge of working on a busy science campus.

Hi Sandra! What attracted you to this job?

“I’ve always loved working with people and have enjoyed being that ‘first port of call’ in previous roles. So, when I was offered a security position at YBC, I saw it as a great opportunity to take on a new challenge within a familiar environment.”

What did you do before working at YBC?

“I began my career in a solicitor’s firm where I stayed for over 20 years. I started out in the post room, supervising a small team and then gradually, through multiple different roles, became a personal assistant to the senior partner. I was proud to take on this role after years of hard work and progression since leaving school.”

What are your main roles and responsibilities, and what does a typical day look like?

“My role is incredibly varied, which is one of the things I enjoy most about it! I start my day with a 6:45am handover from the night shift team, and from there, no two days are quite the same. I support day-to-day operations by managing access passes, issuing ID cards, and creating profiles for new starters – chances are, if you’ve got a pass, we’ve had a chat!

“Throughout the day, I’m monitoring the barriers to ensure staff, contractors, and couriers are swiping in properly. I also spend time patrolling the site and perimeter, and keeping an eye on things from the control room via CCTV. I handle calls, emails, and intercoms, assist with deliveries, and coordinate closely with reception and facilities to keep everything running smoothly.

“There’s a strong focus on staying organised and being ready to respond, whether it’s helping during an evacuation, dealing with lost property, or preparing for the unexpected. It’s a fast-paced, people-focused role that definitely keeps me on my toes!”

What do you enjoy most about your job?

“Working in security has been a great opportunity for me to learn new skills and face new challenges. It’s certainly a job that I’m never bored in, as there is always something to see or do. I’m such a people person at heart, and people are at the very centre of my role – I love catching up with people.”

What do you find most challenging about your job?

“One of the biggest challenges has been learning my way around the site, especially remembering where all the different offices are located! It’s a large campus, so getting familiar with everything took some time, but it’s become easier with experience.”

What skills or qualities do you think are most important for someone in front-of-house security?

“Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential in front-of-house security. You’re often the first person that people see when they arrive, so making a good impression really matters. Integrity, trustworthiness, and attention to detail are crucial for keeping the site safe, especially on a science campus. I also see myself as a friendly, roaming presence around campus, offering support where needed and helping staff and visitors feel welcome and at ease.”

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone interested in a security role?

“Be prepared to stay adaptable! You need to think on your feet, stay calm when things change unexpectedly, and be ready to handle a range of situations. It’s not just about keeping a site secure, it’s about being reliable, approachable, and able to respond confidently, whether it’s a quiet day or something more challenging.”

What do you do in your spare time?

“When I’m not working, I love spending time outdoors, especially walking in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales, with Appletreewick and Burnsall being two of my favourite spots. I’m a big tennis fan and enjoy both watching and playing, although I don’t get on the court as much as I used to. I also enjoy a good holiday, and I’m looking forward to my next getaway to Madeira!”
